World record Skandalopetra broken on Bonaire
One of the things you need to practice Skandalopetra is a good lung capacity. And free diver Karol Meyer certainly has that lung capacity. On Bonaire she recently broke the world record in this ancient diving discipline. Meyer dove to an amazing depth of 68.9 metres. You can watch the video here.
Ancient diving discipline
Skandalopetra comes from ancient Greece. Sponge diving fisherman used this diving method to get the sponges of the ocean floor. They dropped down to the seabed holding a heavy stone in their arms. After the collected the sponges, they were pulled up to the surface with a rope.
